So I put my hat on quick, went over across the street, went in the back way through somebody else's office and went into see Harry, avoiding the press if possible, although one press man did catch me coming out and wanted to know what I'd seen Hopkins about. I said, “Oh nothing, just a little routine about the equal rights for women amendment,” which was always something you could talk to anybody about safely. I steered the conversation into that as a protection.

At any rate, I saw Harry and said, “I've just talked with the President on the telephone. He says that he's made up his mind that he wants Wallace for Vice President.”

Harry said, “All right, that's good. I'm certainly glad he's decided something. We're in a turmoil as long as he doesn't decide.” I had known Harry a long time, so then he said, “You'll excuse me, Frances, won't you, if after all the chicanery I've been through, I check this myself?”

I said, “Yes, Harry, I will excuse you. I think it's the right thing for you to do.”

I understood perfectly that much as he would like to trust me, and did trust me, he wasn't taking any chances on anybody giving him a bum steer. He had a completely private wire that couldn't be tapped right
