out there. It isn't a poor house exactly, but it's almost the only institution of that type around Washington. She went out there and showed her concern for poverty and its results.

Hopkins and Williams could always see her. They would ask to see her and she would see them. They would go over to the White House in the morning. They would tell her what was going on. They would point out to her some dreadful situation that had been reported through their workers. She would be much interested in it. If they suggested it, it would gradually be that she would go and look-see herself.

That was wonderful because it gave them the opportunity to attract attention to this particular sore scot in our social life. She would go and look in the back alleys. She even went down to some of these very terrible West Virginia places where poverty was stalking because there wasn't any work. All that kind of thing helped them to create the atmosphere in the public mind by which the public mind accepted the idea of enormous sums of money for relief.

Then they came to Mrs. Roosevelt with every small problem. They kept her right up to date in every little thing that went on in the relief field. She would say,
