I think Knox took office at least a week before Stimson, because I seem to remember him coming into Cabinet meeting, being introduced around, and Stimson was not there. I had known Stimson quite a long time in New York, but I had not known Knox. Mrs. Knox was a nice little person, but it was kind of an embarrassing situation for her to be brought to Washington because she hadn't been around much with the Colonel previously for many many years. They used to say, “They took her out of mothballs.” He took her out of mothballs, as a matter of fact, when he ran for Vice President, but I guess she had gone back into mothballs in the meantime. She was a good, game sport, I must say. She was a rich woman in her own right, and she did very well. She had kind of fussy, prissy ways, but she didn't run out on the major things. She was all right. She did her beat to do the right thing and never betrayed to the world, or to anybody, any personal dissatisfactions with her lot in life. She was all right.

So there was a big change in the Cabinet at this time. There was a change in Army, Navy, Agriculture, Commerce and the Post Office.
