that period those two contributed the most to our discussions. Our thinking was certainly largely formed by their thinking.

Another thing that happened that fall was the death of Speaker William Bankhead. The funeral was in early September and it was as hot as Tophet. It was a frightfully hot period. Will Bankhead had made the great renunciation on the platform at the convention. He had drawn to himself great appreciation, applause, affection and respect because of the way he did - on a very high-minded level. I've never been sure how well he performed as Speaker, how much he carried the President's ball for him, which he should do as Speaker of the House. I've never been sure, because it always seemed to me that we were going after somebody else to help put a thing over than there was a crisis in the
