in the Congress. Mrs. Bankhead was willing. Early said, “The President insists that we owe this to the Speaker.”

I said, “Why Steve?”

He said, “We're in a campaign. We've got to make friends. Many of these Southerners are disaffected. There's an awfully big anti-war crowd in the south. There's nothing like showing respect to one of their own to make them feel favorable to you. The President's right. He's got the right idea. It's going to a full-dress, State funeral.” Steve called back a little later to say, “what's more the entire Cabinet and other high officers of the government are going to go to Jasper, Alabama to attend the local funeral and burial there.”

I said, “Oh Steve, not really?”

“Yes, ma'am, “he said. “It's going to be full-dress.”

I said, “what do you mean? The men are all going to wear morning coats?”

“Yes ma'am,” said Steve, and they did.

I always used to say that when anything had to be full-dress it was much easier for a lady than it was for a man. Ladies' full-dress can be thin. You can wear your best black-dress, but it can be made of sheer material. You can wear a black silk coat, which isn't
