very hot and doesn't weigh much, a neat little black straw hat, black gloves, and you're fully dressed for a funeral, or white gloves and you're full-dressed for something else that you're got to go to. Whereas the men always had to go home and change from the bottom up apparently, and get into everything including morning coats and striped trousers, which are very warm, with high starched collars.

Anyhow we had the funeral at the Capitol. That was in the usual order. Both houses of Congress convened in the Representatives' chamber. The members of the Cabinet sat in the front row. The members of the Supreme Court sat along beside them. High officers of the military and naval departments sat in other seats. They put in extra chairs in the front wells. All members that could be gathered were present. They proceeded with the usual State funeral, which is a very unpleasant affair anyhow. I still think I could devise a better one if they let me. However, it appears what the midwestern, southern, very personal Protestant religious group is accustomed to. They don't mind it being that way. There's lot of speechmaking. Different people rise and make speeches. The body lies in the well of the House, in a coffin draped with the flag of
