the silliness. Senate pages and pages in the House of Representatives rushed down the stairs with great wreathes and bouquets of flowers. That always seemed so out of place. Finally the caisson got going. Apparently the people had gotten into the cars.

Mrs. Bankhead was ready to go. I've forgotten whether Tallulah went down to that. She didn't go with Mrs. Bankhead anyhow. She went separately. Mrs. Bankhead was not Tallulah's mother. Tallulah was the Speaker's daughter though and was there. I remember Tallulah at Jasper, but not at that point.

Then the President's automobile went. Then came the officers of the Cabinet in rank, as usual, following the order of their standing. There was, of course, a delegation of Congressmen, a delegation of Senators who had been appointed to go, a large committee. We got aboard the funeral train, which was air conditioned. It was a very hot day. Of course, it wasn't as hot in Washington as it was the next day in Jasper, not by a long shot, but it was warm.

I remember very little about the journey down except that we in the cabinet all had dinner together. Everybody talked politics generally. I guess the only person who wasn't there was Henry Wallace who met the
