hour, but would stay aboard the train until such time as the funeral cortege was ready to proceed to the church. He was to be buried from the First Baptist, or the Second Methodist, or one of those two churches. It was some church in the town. The whole town of Jasper had been given a holiday for the day. All places of business were closed, all banks, all schools. The population of Jasper would be in the streets to do honor to their distinguished son. We would go in procession in our cars to the church. Places had been reserved for officers of the Cabinet and we would take our places in the reserved section. The Secret Service men were already there, were guarding the galleries, and would we please keep our appointed places because that made everything easier for everybody.

Then when the funeral was over, since we had already paid our respects to Mrs. Bankhead, it was thought advisable that we should not press her any further. She would go to the grave and the members of the government would not go to the grave. The interment would be a family affair. I seem to remember this, but I'm not absolutely sure. We would then proceed back to the train and the train would start as soon as everybody was aboard. It was anticipated that no one would delay in coming
