What's the sense of it?” I realize that a candidate should to places like that once in a while and show himself. You can't get the Presidential candidate to go always and I was welling to do my part just to keep the party together, but I really think I was more useful at bipartisan meetings. The people in command of the speakers bureau agreed with me. I wa more useful before a bipartisan audience and where there was a speaker from the Republican Party, as well as from our side. We discussed the issues under those circumstances.

I still love that kind of a meeting. To this day that's where I want to speak. Emma Guffey Miller got me up on one of those that year in western Pennsylvania. It was a woman's meeting, a Federation of Women's Clubs thing. Emma Guffey Miller got them stirred up to the fact that they ought to have a big woman's meeting. She said she'd provide a Democratic speaker and sore-body else could provide a Republican speaker. It was a big meeting. Emma said to me, “You know, there are many more about twice as many Republicans. I've done my best to get the Democratic women out, but they aren't
