I was very much interested in Lend Lease because it seemed to me to be a major move in the development of the war and in United States foreign policy. I was so interested that I even went to the Senate to hear the final debate. I was there when young Henry Cabot Lodge made his final decision and about faced. I also had thought pretty well of him, and I recognized, as not everybody does, the terrible pressures he was under, because, after all, he had a very large Irish constituency. The idea of helping out the British was not very popular among that part of his constituency.

Young Henry Cabot Lodge has certainly studied his grand-father's career, and, also, has always said that his grand-father was misinterpreted, that he was not opposed to inter-national amity and even international friendship and the development of our allies. There is evidence that that's correct. I hate to say this because Mrs. Woodrow Wilson hit the ceiling when somebody hinted it once in my presence and her presence, and when I sort of agreed with them. But there is evidence that one of the things that ailed Cabot Lodge was his pride and another was his feeling of the greater superiority and greater responsibility of the Republican Party.
