Later on, the Office of Production Management was set up, and Hillman and Knudsen were appointed to head it up. That didn't affect us any differently than the appointment of Hillman to the previous advisory committee. So far as we were concerned in the Labor Department it was the same situation. As a matter of fact, I think that when I was discussing the Advisory Commission of the Council of National Defense, I mingled all the way through my recollections of what that advisory commission did and of what, a little later on, the Office of Production Management, with the double-headed management of Knudsen and Hillman, did. I think I've blended the two recollections because one flowed into the other so quickly and so naturally. I don't think in my recollection I can readily distinguish between where one ended and the other began. Everything went on just as it had been as far as we were concerned, except we gave them more and more material and people, and at the same time Hillman appointed more and more people, more and more hangers-on.

I'm asked where this left the Department as to prestige. I don't know. I never did know, and I don't care. Prestige really doesn't mean much of anything outside of the Washington
