Q:

This is Texas--style, right?

Stanton:

Yes. But I think he wanted to talk to somebody that he could trust and who would argue with him, if the other person could get a word in edgeways. But he didn't want any argument; he just wanted to talk.

Incidentally, I do remember something that took place in that bedroom on an earlier occasion. He was putting his shirt on, or he was putting his pants on, and he was pulling up his pants and he was tucking the tail of his shirt into his trousers. And he said: “How do you put your pants on?”

I said: “Well, gee, come to think of it, I guess I put my shirt on first and then I put on my trousers. Why?”

“One of these God--damned, smart--aleck eastern kids, eh? That's what the Harvard boys do!”

“What are you talking about?”

“Well,” he said, “the day that Jack Kennedy was assassinated I was in his room before we got in the cavalcade, and he put his shirt on first and then he put his trousers on.” And he said: “That's the first time I ever saw any man do that.” He said: “Men don't dress that way.” [laughter]
