Now it's funny and interesting as a footnote, but I think it bears on his noting the way the easterners behaved and that he was not a part of it. I never watched to see how he did it later, but I'd bet you a nickel that part of the time he put his shirt on first and then he put on his trousers. Because he was wanting to be accepted in the eastern community; and for that I feel very sorry.

Ruth didn't feel sorry. She said, you know, he should be what he is and not try to be something else. It's just a point of view, that's all.

Q:

Talking a little bit about his views of the press, in general, do you think he--he was obviously very vigilant. I mean, he had three TV's in every room, right? He monitored the press constantly. What were some of his opinions about how the press covered him.

Stanton:

Like every President I've ever known, they're [the press is] just totally wrong, didn't understand what was going on, uninformed, unprepared. “Look at the questions they ask.” You know.

Q:

Were there any particular networks or people that he despised? Reporters?

Stanton:

Johnson? No, I don't think so. There was enough disdain to go around for all of us.

Q:

It was equally dispersed?

Stanton:

Sure.
