Programs & Curriculum

The required field work takes students out of the classroom and into diverse placements in the five boroughs of New York City (and beyond). From the Upper East Side to Astoria, Queens, to the South Bronx, students choose from over 400 field placement agencies including high schools, senior centers, and hospitals. Students interact with a variety of populations in the 21 hours they work each week.

Internationally focused organizations are included on the extensive list of sites, and students gain international experience working with a multitude of nationalities and cultures.

First year placements will provide a broad experience in practice with individuals, families, groups, organizations and communities while second-year field placement match students with their designated method concentration and field of practice.

Each student has an on-site field instructor, a trained master’s level social worker who’s employed at the field placement site. Each student is also assigned a faculty field adviser who serves as a guide throughout our student’s placement experience, helping to devise successful strategies and practical solutions.

Through our extensive field experience you’ll learn the skills needed to serve as clinician, planner, researcher, organizer, policy analyst and administrator.

Field Experience Includes:

    • Interviewing a diverse range of clients

    • Assessing situations

    • Designing and implementing interventions

    • Learning how to be a community advocate
