Social Science Research Council (SSRC) - Mellon Predoctoral Research Grant: Funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, this program builds on the Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship (MMUF) Program, established in 1989 as the centerpiece of the Mellon Foundation's effort to support the development and training of historically underrepresented groups of scholars. The MMUF Program is designed to enhance the faculties at colleges and universities by providing support for minority scholars and others with a demonstrated commitment to diversity.
Under the program structure, students are typically identified in the sophomore year at 73 colleges and universities, which include 40 institutions that participate through a grant made to the United Negro College Fund.
Eligibility: Doctoral students in Mellon designated fields that held the Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship at a participating college or university may apply for the SSRC-Mellon Predoctoral Research Grant online.

Ford Foundation Predoctoral Fellowships For Minorities: US Citizens who are African-American, Hispanic-American, Native American, or Pacific Islanders enrolled in full-time graduate programs are encourage to apply. Awards are given to programs that will lead to careers in teaching and research at the university or college level in the behavioral and social sciences, humanities, mathematics, and physical and life sciences. Dissertation fellowship are awarded for 9-12 months to students who have completed all the requirements for the Doctorate except the dissertation. Candidates are expected to defend the dissertation at the end of the award period. The stipend is $17,000 and the home institution is expected to cover tuition and fees. The three years of support must be used within five years. Renewal of fellowship support for the second and third years is contingent on certification to the NRC by the fellowship institution that the fellow is making satisfactory academic progress toward the PhD or ScD degree. Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowships (FLAS): This program provides academic year and summer fellowships for the study of modern non-western European languages and area studies and some western European languages (French, German, Spanish, and Italian are given lowest priority). Fellowships are available to US citizens or permanent residents who are not native speakers of the language of application. Applicants are expected to enroll in an eligible modern foreign language course and related area courses in preparation for future service to the US either in college teaching or in other non-profit, non-sectarian public service. FLAS provides a $14,000 stipend and tuition and fees for the academic year. The summer FLAS provides a $2,400 stipend and tuition.
