  • American Association of University Women (AAUW): Dissertation Fellowships are available to women who will complete their dissertation writing between July 1, 2003, and June 30, 2004. To qualify, applicants must have completed all course work, passed all required preliminary examinations, and received approval for their research proposals or plan by Nov. 15, 2002. Students holding any fellowship for writing a dissertation in the year prior to the AAUW Educational Foundation fellowship year are not eligible. Open to applicants in all fields of study, except engineering. Scholars engaged in researching gender issues are encouraged to apply. Fifty-one Dissertation Fellowships are available. Stipend is $20,000. Deadline: Contact GSAS
  • Charlotte W. Newcombe Doctoral Dissertation Fellowships: This fellowship is designed to encourage original and significant study of ethical or religious values in all fields of the humaaaaanities and social sciences. In addition to topics in religious studies or in ethics (philosophical or religious), dissertations might consider the ethical implications of foreign policy, the values influencing political decisions, the moral codes of other cultures, and religious or ethical issues reflected in history or literature. Winners will receive $17,500 for 12 months of full-time dissertation writing. Contact the foundation for an application. Deadline: Contact GSAS
  • Lindt Fellowship of Columbia University: The Lindt Fellowship is open to registered students in the social sciences (not including history). The purpose is to enable exceptionally well qualified candidates for the PhD to complete the writing of their dissertations over a nine month period. A Lindt Fellowship will not be awarded for the purpose of conducting research, either at home or abroad. Preference will be given to candidates who can realistically expect to defend the dissertation toward the end of their tenure as Fellows. Applications are available at the Office of Student Affairs in 107 Low Library. For more information, please contact Kerry Gluckmann, Director of Financial Aid, at (212) 854-3808 or [email protected]. Deadline: contact GSAS.
  • Spencer Foundation, Dissertation Fellowship Program: This program seeks to encourage a new generation of scholars from a wide range of disciplines and professional fields to undertake research relevant to the improvement of education. These fellowships support individuals whose dissertations show potential for bringing fresh and constructive perspectives to the history, theory, or practice of formal or informal education anywhere in the world.  Applicants need not be citizens of the United States; however, they must be candidates for the doctoral degree at a graduate school within the United States. These fellowships are not intended to finance data collection or the completion of doctoral coursework, but rather to support the final analysis of the research topic and the writing of the dissertation. For this reason, all applicants must document that they will have completed all pre-dissertation requirements by June 1, 2006 and must provide a clear and specific plan for completing the dissertation within a one or two-year time frame.
