As I remember that campaign, DeSapio ran against him and people called him a “left-footed Irishman.”
That means Protestant?
Yes. The reason I brought it up is that I had the impression at that time that the VID was looking very much for a Catholic to run, preferably an Irishman or an Italian, and they couldn't find one.
Well, Charlie was in on the beginning of the VID, and so it's not likely that they went out into left field. He was there in '56.
Right. Now that brings me to the question: Lanigan moved into the Village just before he ran for district leader.
He was imported. I was there then in the VID, and we were looking for a candidate in 1960. In 1960 he won as a state committeeman, but he did not live in the Village, because the district went all the way up to 40th Street for state committee. But in '61 when we were looking for a candidate, he was a natural guy. We had won with him, and therefore he was the natural candidate to run, and he moved into the Village simply because we
