Q:

I Remember, this was considered so newsworthy when he won that it was actually banner lined in the New York Times.

Koch:

So was mine.

Q:

Do I remember rightly (we're really trying to get your memoirs here, but I really would like to pick up some of these details because you've been involved, and some of these people I don't think we're going to interview) that Lanigan announced his candidacy for the United States Senate within 24 or 48 hours after being elected district leader?

Koch:

I think it was county leader. My recollection is that the Sunday following the election (I watched him; he was on one of these talk shows, interview shows) he made it clear that he was a candidate for county leader. It was such a schmucky thing for him to do. He became a horse's ass in a way. You just don't do that. You're elected district leader the first time around; you don't announce that you're going to be county leader. And that's what he did. His goal was to be a Senator, but I don't think that on that particular Sunday following the election he announced for the Senate.

Q:

In any event, he announced his aspiration for higher office.
