And do I recall correctly that he did this really on his own or at least without consultation with the VID?
Correct.
And this upset a lot of people in the VID.
They thought he was a schmuck.
One other thing: I recall once interviewing Lanigan in his business office, and it was all lined up with signed photographs from people like Herbert Lehman, Mrs. Roosevelt and so forth.
I was never in his office, but that would be exactly what he would do. His greatest claim to fame was that he lived in the White House with Mrs. Roosevelt. He was one of the proteges of Mrs. Roosevelt. That's one of the things he did.
I can tell you just a little vignette about Lanigan. I'm so angry with him, because I blame my defeat on his betrayal. When his name would be mentioned, I would bristle; I would turn red. I could just think of murder. So when somebody would say something to me about Lanigan, I came up with this little line that at that time I thought was pretty good... He tried, by the way, subsequently to destroy the VID by forming his own club; it never took off; nobody would go there even though he
