doing this?” and I said, “Oh, yes, how are you, Jim?”
I'd like to put one little footnote in here. First of all, who was head of the umbrella reform organization at that time?
There were five.
I think his first name was arnold.
Arnold Fein was the chairman.
Arnold Fein is who I'm thinking of. If I can slip in just one personal reportorial footnote, I was doing political broadcasting during the big newspaper strike in 1963 at NBC News, and I called up Arnold Fein and asked him what he thought of Lanigan's announced candidacy or heading up the third club, and he came out with a very sharp statement against Lanigan. I went on the air with that in the afternoon, and about eight o'clock the next morning I got a call with somebody associated with Lanigan -- I don't recall his name -- who asked me, “Did Fein hold a news conference?” That's all it was. It was just a response to a reporter's query. But it was very soon after -- perhaps within a day or two -- that Lanigan just withdrew. There may have been other reasons, too, but I just wanted to put in a little reportorial footnote in there.
