She said, “I don't think that Smith has addressed himself sufficiently to the peculiar social interests of women. He hasn't made a drive for the women. I could get him some engagements to speak before women's groups. That's what he needs to do. Will you introduce me to him?”

I said, “I'll try to. I'm going over to a meeting right now where he's going to speak. Would you like to come along and I will introduce you.”

I took her over to this meeting that was held at the Biltmore Hotel in one of the ballrooms.

I believe the account that I give in my book, The Roosevelt I Knew, about the meeting of Al Smith and Mrs. Moskowitz is the correct one, although I'm not really able to say specifically whether I introduced them at the meeting of academic women at the Biltmore or on the way to the meeting. Anyway I did introduce her saying that she was able and intelligent and had contacts that other people didn't have. He accepted her on my recommendation as a recruit who would like to work. He was glad to get anybody and the fact that she was a Republican coming over from Whitman's outfit was clear gain. She was very capable and jumped into the headquarters. There was only a week or ten days left in the campaign, but she made herself felt. She had awfully good ideas. I think she got up at least another meeting. She
