convert to Smith during the time that he was Governor on account of the way he treated her and others in the society in which she was interested when they came up to see him about administrative problems, legislation, for a kind of a blessing or benediction on some private agency that was working along with his general programs.

Another one of them was Cynthia Burden, Mrs. Arthur Burden. Arthur Burden later died and she married Guy Fairfax Cary. She was born Cynthia Burk-Roche. These people were first families of New York. Cynthia's father was a member of the British aristocracy. The title skipped him for one reason or another. His sons inherited from their uncle or their grandfather. He was dead before his father was, or something like that. Anyway, his family are the Lords Fermoy. She was a lovely, charming, interesting, alert, intelligent woman. She became interested in this because she went to see Al Smith about some social work problem.

Aileen Webb and I had been one of the introducers of people like Pauline Davis, Cynthia Burden and Elizabeth Hare, whose family were all good Republicans. They became Al Smith fans in New York. There were quite a number of others. Mrs. Shepard Krech was another one. Then there was Elsie Sloane. I don't know if she ever voted for Smith, but she
