may have been - Mrs. John Sloane. They were fans of Al Smith. Most of them voted for him. Most of them were quite on the bandwagon. They contributed money to his presidential campaign. I don't know how many carried their husbands with them. We didn't look into that. At the time we weren't thinking about it and we didn't even assume it. What I want to say is that Al Smith's friends among that group of women were very enthusiastic about him, because he was so understanding, so generous, so honest, and at the same time so amusing. He wasn't a dull person to talk with. You could talk to him about your affairs and he didn't get pompous and statesmanlike on you. He was down to earth. They were devoted to him.

Aileen Webb, while always a good Democrat, had been among the people who had helped these different social agencies and their committees to get to him. I had, of course, introduced a great many to him at their request. They wanted to see the Governor about some thing and I would help them to get to him. That's how I knew how enthusiastic they were. Aileen Webb was a good Democrat and a very, very attractive woman, a very gentle type.

We joined up at some point and started to go to these western towns. I remember that Aileen wasn't quite as accustomed to traveling in lower berths as I was. Although
