she managed very well she had difficulties about the ventilation and that kind of thing. In those days we didn't have air conditioning. We had to ventilate our berths, and so on.

Our first meeting was in St. Louis at the Jefferson Hotel. That was a wonderful old Victorian hotel. They hadn't modernized it in those days. They have now, and it doesn't look like itself. It was a charming Victorian hotel with a black and white marble floor, crystal chandeliers or something like them, great big parlors on the second floor, high ceilinged rooms, quite Victorian furniture. The Democratic State Committee had taken over the whole second floor of it. That's why I remember these parlors. They were furnished as public parlors, which used to be the pattern in hotels in those days. They all had parlors which were at the disposal of the guests. These had been rented out to the committee and they were very busy up there.
