There were great crowds in the streets. We were no celebrities. We were not the candidates. There was no reason for curiosity bringing them out in the streets, but the streets were full of people so that the car slowed down and had a hard time getting through. There were just mobs outside the hall, all along the little lawn, sidewalk and steps. We turned the corner, drove in back and went in the back door. He sort of hustled us in. I did notice that he hustled us rather quickly in the back door and closed the door. Some man came out and spoke to him all right, saying, “It'll be all right, Senator. Everything's all right.”

The Senator said he was very relieved. He took us to a little room back of the stage and there we sat down. The meeting was to begin at eight o'clock, and it was about ten minutes of eight, or so. Senator Hawes went out and this other man went out. Somebody else came in. Men who were in charge of the meeting kept coming and going. Time was passing. I said to Aileen, “I don't see any meeting. They don't seem to be getting under way.”

I went out and peeked through the curtain, as you can, and there wasn't anybody in the hall. There must have been
