they did, whether it was art, music, the drama, social work, religion, they all touched each other sooner or later. There was lots of population but it didn't have anything to do with public affairs or even cultural affairs. It was very interesting.

There was the great impact of Mr. William D. Maxwell, the Superintendent of Schools. He was a great man. But who is Superintendent of Schools today? You don't know. This was a small world. In anything that any of us did sooner or later we consulted Mr. Maxwell. There was also George Chatfield who was the Truant Officer under him. He was another great fellow that you never could do any kind of social work without going to. With Mr. Maxwell not only could you do no social work without him, but art, culture, literature and the drama all met Mr. Maxwell sooner or later. In New York City he was an old-fashioned school master of the best schools. What he would have been in a small community he was in New York - what the principal of Andover Academy must have been at the time the Academy was strictly a local school. He had a leading part in everything that went on in the community. I think that was Maxwell. People's lives all mingled.

I didn't meet Harry Hopkins until much later, but his sister, Adah Hopkins, must have been around New York at about that time. I must have met her. She was a social worker and she worked on the Survey Magazine. Certainly I knew the
