the looks of it. They'll ruin its park possibilities. They'll just make it into a great traffic highway. Besides I'm reliably informed that though the engineers haven't finished with this, they think it's a very great hazard to navigation. In case of a war we can't have any bridges around there. They'll drop bombs and so forth.”
I came back and I told Harold that I guessed he was right, that the President was not going to approve it. There was nothing more I could do. I couldn't urge it. There were plenty of other public works projects that were available and didn't have Moses's name on them. He finally got federal money for the completion of the Triborough system of bridges, which were also Moses's pets. He got money for a number of other of Moses's projects.
I don't think that Moses made things easy for the President. He disliked him very much - very much! He disliked Roosevelt way back when he was Governor and before he was Governor. I seem to remember that Moses said to me in the period when we knew that Al would not be Governor and that Roosevelt might be that he would never be in Roosevelt's administration if he was elected. I said, “I think you will, Bob.”
He said, “Oh, no, I won't. I don't like him. I don't believe in him. I don't trust him. He won't like me.”
