decline, even though it was his home.” He had entertained President Wilson at this home. I had been to dinners there. He gave handsome dinners. He was quite a host and loved to do a rather showy dinner. He did it very well. He did many of them for good works, to introduce people to each other who could be helpful in good works. He did several during the early days of the Committee on Safety to introduce Irving Bloomingdale to those who were trying to improve the conditions of work in department stores, and things of that sort. He always used his social opportunities to introduce the right people to each other when they could help each other in social work. He was very sincerely devoted to the spiritual aspirations of people like Lillian Wald. He was a true follower of that school.
I suppose that he sold this house on 72nd Street some time around his coming back from Turkey, or perhaps when he went to Turkey. Then when he was back in circulation again he was living in a large duplex apartment in a Fifth Avenue apartment house.
It was at some dinner at the apartment that I met Eddie Flynn. I remember that Mr. William Church Osborn, and Mrs. Osborn were there that same night. There were a number of other people there who were on the fringes of politics. I think Leo Wolman was there that night. There
