were some youngish thoughtful people of that type who were there - one or two of those. I couldn't say who else was there because I can't remember, but it was a very handsome dinner. The piece de resistance was pheasant in plumage. They do that in France, particularly, with the great cock's tail up. It was a very handsome dinner and quite a large dinner. Mr. Morgenthau was very rich and the best was none too good.

It was there that I recognized this very presentable and interesting man who was cynical about politics and yet was said to be very able. That was sort of a surprise. I had spoken to Flynn on a number of occasions, but I think I had not known him up to that time. His wife was charming, delightful, good-looking, nicely and appropriately dressed, and altogether very presentable. As you looked at him, you said to yourself, “That man may want to be Governor. He has the kind of presentability that will make it easier for him to be Governor than for anybody whom I know who has come out of Tammany Hall.” You could get him by upstate when you couldn't get by some of Tammany Hall's favorite sons. On the other hand, he had never been to the Legislature. He had never run for office. He described himself as being uninterested in running for office.

I remember that he talked a good deal about Fordham
