how to take care of ladies. I took care of Judge ‘So-and-So's’ lady. I gave perfect satisfaction. I'll tell you what I'll do. I'll wash your gloves every morning. Bring your white gloves in and I will wash them and dry them in here.”

I thought Miss Jay and I would die. To this day we remember it as the thing the receptionist thought was his duty. One of the courtesies that he was going to offer was to wash my white gloves. He was very well-intentioned. He was very sweet and kind, and he wanted to be helpful, but he had no conception, and apparently the office had never had any conception, of serious duties and serious work surrounding the Secretary.

As soon as Mr. Doak was out, Mr. White, the Assistant Secretary, came back, He said, “I want to congratulate you.”

I said, “Why?”

“Well,” he said, “I didn't think our former Secretary would be able to leave so quickly.”

I said, “I hope I wasn't rude to him.”

“No,” he said, “you were all right, but I didn't think he'd go so quickly. He wasn't counting on your coming down to stay,”

I said, “What did he think I was going to do?”

“Well,” he said, “he just thought you wouldn't come for quite a while and things would go on as usual. I think you did the right thing. I'm glad you came when you did
