and I'm glad you have made the break, because it's going to be difficult. You're going to find a great many difficult things right now. There are some very serious situations here. I think you did the right thing.”

I said, “Mr. White, will you stay on with me for a little while?”

He said, “Yes, I'll stay as long as you need me, but, of course, you know I'm a Republican and a Republican appointee.”

I said, “Yes, but you know the ropes here and perhaps you'll give me some little guidance,” He said, “I certainly will. I'm a Republican and I don't like Democrats, but I like my country. I want my country well-governed. I like the government and I want to cooperate. I will do so.”

He told me all about himself then. He was a lawyer by training. He came from Indiana. He had been a judge in a petty court in Indiana. He had had other posts. He had been prosecuting attorney. He'd had a good legal experience, largely on the public side. I thought to myself, “He'll do very well indeed for me.” So I asked him about Mr. Husband and Mr. Husband's duties in immigration. He said, “Of course, Husband does nothing but immigration. Although he has the title of Second Assistant Secretary, he's the acting Chief of
