who used to be the Red Cross home service man, and a number of others.” They named a number of well-known people who had had real experience in relief and even in disaster relief administration. “But none of them have given as much thought to this program, or given as much thought to the political problems involved in it, because this has to be done by the federal government in cooperation with the states. Many of the states are broke and yet you've got to take them in, help them, and so forth.”
It was a perfectly good program. I certainly couldn't make myself an expert on it in three-quarters of an hour, sitting under the stairs at the Women's University Club, but I had already learned that in the fix that we were in you had to take things quick and you had to take them in quick. You had to approve them quick and just trust to the Lord to give you guidance to amend them if you had to. At any rate, I said, “All right, I will undertake to sell this to the President and to get him committed to it. What shall I tell him about who's to be the director?”
“Tell him to take either one of us he wants.”
