McIntyre said, “She's absolutely right, boss. Hugh is just an easy mark for any grafter anywhere in the USA. He doesn't know the difference. I don't know what he would do. He would throw those public works around to please anybody and to get him off his back. I think it would be terrible.”

The President said, “Why didn't you tell me that before, Mac?”

“You didn't ask me,” said McIntyre, “and it's not my business to tell you.”

We had a good laugh at that. I think I said to him, “Consult somebody else.”

“No,” he said, “I really believe you're right, but, oh Lord, how will I break this to Hugh? What will I say to Hugh?”

“Well,” I said, “surely he's not a fool. You can tell him that's what you think you'll do.”

Then he said, “Who'll I put in charge of the public works?”

Well, I hadn't thought that out. I had given it some thought, however, and I again suggested Dykstra, who had a reputation. He said, “No, I want Dykstra for something else,”
