was someone who had had a great deal to do with this particular strike and walkout and with all the episodes leading up to it.
I had a brief talk with the employer and then Swope came over to my office. I told them who Mr. Swope was, believing that they would appreciate and have some respect for so eminent a manufacturer as the President of the General Electric Company, a man who had a considerable reputation for his managerial and business skill. However, they didn't have much respect for him, it turned out. He didn't mean anything at all to them.
Swope's a very mild and agreeable man, the most persuasive type of person. His business success was based upon his natural persuasiveness. He started in on persuading. I fortified him where I had to and kept silent when it seemed the best thing to do. He made no headway at all. The proprietor just kept saying, “Our people do not wish to belong to the union. They don't want to belong to the union. We know that our people don't want to belong to the union. They are being forced out of terror to walk out. Two or three people in our mill joined this union and they are now forcing the others to walk out. They're behaving terribly. They're walking the streets. They're making rumpuses in the streets.” All of this was not true. They were making
