were mortified to death to see her doing this. I could see Davis's hair just rising, as well as Swope's. They had their teeth on edge about a thing like that. However, that was neither here nor there and the thing went along. Nobody answered her. Davis said, “Yes, we spent yesterday and the day before with Leggett and this board. They have given us a sort of an outline. We have agreed with Leggett that we would each of us see different organizations of employers and labor people, and then come back on Friday to his board, after each of us had picked up some information. We'd be very glad to assign you to any group you'd like to be assigned to.” I've forgotten what group she chose, but anyhow things went on.

The committee spent most of its time in outer contacts. They didn't meet every day, because they were out making these contacts, visiting the board, and so on.

There was another strange situation that had developed in this committee. While I was at Geneva at the ILO, I was working very hard, carrying a great deal of responsibility as the head of the American delegation always has to, making a lot of speeches, really on edge, keeping up with the situation, and doing a great deal of entertaining. There's a lot of diplomacy in it.
