Richberg and I, therefore, seeking to get him away from the offices of the NRA, proposed to him one evening at my house that he come to my office the next morning at ten o'clock, direct from his hotel, without going to the NRA office at all. Nobody would know where he was so they couldn't get at him. There he could give an hour, an hour and a half, two hours, or as long as it took, to meet with Senator Wagner, Richberg, Wyzanski and me. By this time Johnson had conceived a great respect for Wyzanski. Wyzanski had fished him out of two or three difficult holes and had written out the proper words for him when he was under challenge. So he was very glad to have Wyzanski in the conference.
I telephoned Wagner and he agreed he'd come over. So he was at my office at ten o'clock. Richberg went out to the hotel and got Johnson, bringing him to my office before he went to the NRA office. The thought was that we could give two hours, if necessary, to this argument, because no one had been able to present to Hugh Johnson systematically the arguments against having it in NRA. So we started in.
We were all sweetness and light. I had extracted from Wagner a promise not to hit the ceiling, not to blow up, but to treat Hugh with gloves on. We all did that.
