that morning to give him that appearance, but I figured that the accumulation of weeks and months of drinking were just coming to a head then. He was way off, wasn't listening, wasn't paying attention. What we said was wasted on him, I began to fear.
Finally, after we had been at it about three-quarters of an hour (and he had promised two hours), he jumped up all of a sudden. He rose up from his chair as though he'd been shot. It was a dramatic gesture. He said, “I've got to go. I've got to go. I have duties waiting for me.”
I actually grabbed him physically by the coat tail and said, “Sit down, General Johnson, you promised us that you'd pay attention and come to a conclusion today.”
“All right, I can come to a conclusion now. I have concluded this. I delegate Richberg. He's my agent. I delegate him to deal with this.”
I said, “Well, does that mean that whatever Richberg agrees to you stand bound by?”
He said, “I do, so help me God. Richberg, you stay here as long as they need you. You enter into an agreement and I'm bound by it.”
He stalked out. I remember thinking, “This is lucky. He isn't able to decide the matter himself. He isn't able to understand it. He isn't able to think it through. He's
