fine then and I thought perhaps all he needed was public attention, that it would make a good man of him, that it would help him get his strength together. That's what's the matter with his family life. That's what's the matter with Mrs. Johnson. What that poor woman's been through! What she's stood for! I know you think she's a kind of a fool and she is a kind of a fool, but she's been through enough to make her a fool. She doesn't know where she is and can't make any plan ever. She's really had a rough time. I've stood by Hugh. I like him. I'm fond of him. I'll always see that he has work to do and a salary coming in in one way or another. He can earn the money when he's in good shape, if somebody keeps watch over him and stands over him, telling him what to do.”

I thought of something and said, “Well, Mr. Baruch, I have a suggestion to make to you. Why don't you say to Hugh that you need him badly and want him back? Tell him you need him and have a high post for him. Give him a good salary for a while at least and give him something to do that will take him out of the country - to Europe, or something. You've got interests in Europe.”

Mr. Baruch looked at me as though I were crazy. He said, “Why, I can't do that.”

I said, “Why not?”
