“Why,” he said, “Hugh has been at the top of the world now. He can never come back and work for Barney Baruch again and be a Number 2 man or a Number 3 man. He couldn't do that. A man won't come down. He'll never work again. I never can take him back. He can't step down from being king of the world, which is the state of mind he's been in, to being Barney Baruch's Number 3 man. That just doesn't happen. It's out of the question.”
Perhaps he was right, but as an act of kindness he ought to have made the gesture. He just said, “Hugh wouldn't do it. He'd be furious at me for even thinking about it.”
I said, “You could make the offer very attractive.”
I think he ought to have done it. All of us thought he ought to have done it and I think it could have been put to Hugh so that he would take it without humiliation.
At any rate, he said, “Look here, Walter Chrysler is coming over here this afternoon to pick me up. Walter Chrysler's a great friend of Hugh Johnson's. He thinks a lot of Johnson. He knows his weakness. Why don't you put it up to Walter Chrysler? Perhaps Chrysler will give him a job, offer him something that's very attractive and would look well.”
