“Well,” I said, “now, Mr. Sloan, some of them do. We do know that so many thousands of them have joined the union and paid their dues. That we know. They had a convention. You know that. There were an awful lot of people at it. That does mean something. I don't know how many of the employees of General Motors belong to the union and I won't for one moment say that I believe the figure given by the union itself is necessarily the correct figure. But we know that a great many people do belong to the union. What about them? Haven't they got a right to? The law says they have a right to join unions of their own choice. What's the idea? Where are you going to draw the line?”

“Well, I wouldn't deal with any union unless the men absolutely, bona fide, belonged to it, and work for me. If they work for somebody else, I won't have anything to do with it. I won't deal with anybody who doesn't work for me.”

I said, “Well, the officers of the union probably don't work for the General Motors Company. They may work somewhere else.”

“That doesn't matter. They've got to work for the General Motors Company. I'm not going to deal with people who don't work for General Motors. We can't tie
