up what we're going to do bargaining with men who won't work for us. We can only bargain with the people who work for us, and we can only bargain about the people who work for us and who belong to that union.”
This was just about what Chrysler had been saying to me. I said, “So you think it would not be impossible to deal with them with regard to the members who work for you and who are bona fide members of the union and will say. In making any agreements with regard to General Motors you will deal only with people who are bona fide employees of General Motors. Is that what you're talking about?”
“Well, that's about it.”
I said, “But Mr. Sloan, the more important of these men in the union probably don't work for General Motors.”
“Well, they can find somebody in General Motors who does. They've got to deal through their own people. I'm not going to have my people dealing with somebody who doesn't work for us. We will only deal with them for their own members.”
Well, we fussed it back and forth, with many variations on the wording, and so forth and so on. We finally agreed to something and I wrote it down. He
