I said, “No, that isn't my information as yet. None of our people have reported to me that there's anything like an agreement with Chrysler anywhere near.”
“Well, what does Chrysler mean by fooling them that way. That fellow Walter Chrysler is running out, as usual. He plays like a fox. That's what he does. If Walter Chrysler thinks he can get me boxed up in a hole, he's greatly mistaken.”
I said, “Our conciliators from the Department of Labor tell me that, although some members of the union have seen some of the Chrysler people, and have made some demands upon them, that so far as our conciliators can find out, so far as they can find out there is no step at all being taken toward any agreement or any recognition. I don't know what their program is and what they'll do.”
“That ought to be found out. I can't accept any such thing as you propose.”
I said, “Oh well, now, Mr. Sloan, you've got to accept something, you know. I'm not sure the men will accept this, but I don't want to propose it to them unless it is at least within the possibilities. What you say to me today isn't tying you down. Just let me propose this to them as a possibility, as a basis for talking with you, as a basis for the beginning of talks with your company and your people.”
