That was the answer.

After several weeks I had occasion to talk to John L. Lewis one day about something else. I said to him, “I understand you've taken Mr. Pressman on as a legal adviser in the CIO.”

He said, “Yes, yes, we've taken him as a legal adviser. A very capable lawyer.”

I said, “So I'm informed. I'm told he's a very able lawyer, but I don't hear such good things about him.

“Oh, I know what you mean,” he said. “I know what you're talking about. You have been told that he is a Communist.”

I said, “No, I haven't been told that he is a Communist, but I have been told, though I have no evidence, that there's something not quite right.”

He said, “Have you got any evidence?” I said, “No, just rumor reached may ear, Just rumor that Pressman has somo very fancy ideas, that he's pretty radical.”

“No, no, nothing of the sort,” said Lewis. Then I said, “Well, I don't know. Some of the things I've heard would make me, if I were in your place, want to look him up pretty tight, because after all he's working
