I went in the spirit of amiability and friendliness. Houghteling, Fitzgerald, Shoemaker and three or four others went along in the car. Some of them thought that the committee would give way and let the public in and they wanted to be there if newspaper reporters and other people got in.
We went into the outer office. Mr. Hatton Sumners' secretary came out and said that the committee was assembled. They were having a brief meeting previous to my appearance. They were now in session and wouldn't be ready for me for about ten minutes. Mr. Sumners had asked her to ask me to make myself comfortable. Then she turned to the others and said, “Mr. Sumners asked me to say to you gentlemen that no one may come into the hearing room except Mr. Reilly and Miss Perkins will come into the private anteroom now.” So she shut the door on the others and took Reilly and me into the private anteroom with her.
Then she said to Reilly, “Mr. Sumners asked me to say that he isn't quite sure that the committee will agree to let you come with Miss Perkins, but that he is recommending it. That's what they are discussing now.” So it was a mind your p's and q's situation anyway.
Well, we sat there in the outer office for ten
