I am to get home for Sunday.”
He said, “I know, but I just thought I'd tell you that. If they could get home for Sunday, it would mean a great deal to them. They're very tired of this. They want to get home.”
I said, “Well, what do you suggest?”
“Well,” he said, “I've looked this up and the only train they can make that will get them home leaves at eight o'clock tonight. I thought that if you just sort of took note of that, you could press your points and make it clear that you would like to have them able to get home. I think that along about six o'clock tonight they'll give way on almost anything that isn't settled.”
So we played for that, not cheating them at all, but just moving quickly over unimportant points. I kept the very best stenographers that we had so that there wouldn't be any mistakes in the drafts that were written up, and everything wouldn't have to be sent out to be corrected again. Well, they pushed along and they pushed along. They began looking at their watches about four-thirty. I said, “I do hope we can finish tonight, gentlemen. I'm extremely anxious to get away for Sunday. I'd like so much to get off tonight.”
