find out just what happened. I think myself that it was extremely bad from to press to know what was happening all through the war. I always kept my eyes in the other direction. I didn't see lots of things that I saw and I'm sure Sherwood did the same thing.

Getting back to Hopkins, his marriage to Barbara was a very good marriage and her death was a very devastating experience for him - very devastating. She had a hard death, suffering for quite a long time. It was very disturbing and distressing to him. Then she had the problem of what to do with Diana and with his son David, who was then half grown and beginning to be funny. I think he wasn't acting well. He wasn't living at home, but was off on his own. He began acting badly and getting into trouble. Harry was completely at a loss as to how handle practical situations in his personal life.

When Barbara died - she died in a hospital - I had the immediate realization that Harry would be completely overwhelmed by what goes on in a house of death. I had gone to the hospital to inquire for Barbara and see if I could see her. She wasn't expected to die that day. I met Harry and I think Aubrey Williams coming out. She had just died. I took Harry home and realized then
