that it was going to be terrible for him. I said, “Harry, it'll kill you. You come over to my house and stay. You've got to go see Diana now and tell Diana (who had a very good nurse), but by tomorrow morning everybody in Washington will begin coming to see you and telephoning. It'll kill you.”

He said, “I can't see anybody. I just can't.”

I said, “You can't stay here in this little house and not see them. You come on over to my house. Anybody you want to see can come over there. My house is yours. You take possession of it. I've got two good servants and there's nobody in it. I'll go and stay with somebody else (as I did). You take possession of this house and see the people you want to see but don't see all the people that come to call.”

So he came over and stayed two or three days. He stayed until the day of the funeral. I lived on California Street. It was a comfort for him because he could see his friends and relatives without seeing everybody. He lived in one of these small houses in Georgetown where you walk right in off the street into the living room. Little Diana would have been everywhere and couldn't be separated from it either.
