“Can't do that.” I know that Harry Hopkins had fixed this up, because he told me later he had. Harry had decided there should be but one labor man, and that it should be Sidney Hillman. Harry told me himself that he had put that up to the President, and that the decision was made. The President said, “I can only have one labor man, one industrialist, one of everything.”

I said, “Well, now there's Leon Henderson you're going to appoint. We've got plenty of economists in the government. You don't need an economist pulled out of the blue to put on this commission. We've got better economists, or as good economists as Henderson ever was already available. All you've got to do is to give them a title. You don't need this Elliott either.”

Miss Elliott was the Dean of Women at the University of North Carolina. She was a very fine woman and a great friend of mine. She had been working for several years on a number of advisory committees. She was an adviser to the women's Bureau in the Department of Labor. She was an adviser to other committees. She was in Washington a great deal. She was an active person in the Women's Division of the Democratic National Committee, and a very fine women—able as she could be all the way around.
