CUSSW Collaborates with the National AIDS Foundation to Conduct Intervention Study with Sex Workers in Mongolia
The Social Intervention Group at the Columbia University School of Social Work (CUSSW) is collaborating with the National AIDS Foundation (NAF) to test the efficacy of an HIV and alcohol abuse prevention program to reduce HIV risk among sex workers in Mongolia.

Dr. Kaushal, associate professor at the Columbia University School of Social Work, has been appointed a Research Fellow by the Institute for the Study of Labor (IZA), the largest consortium of labor economists in Europe.

New Research Finds Most Fathers Taking Paternity Leave
New analyses of a nationally representative sample of families with newborns find that most fathers are taking at least some leave after a birth and that fathers who take longer leaves also are more involved in their children’s care nine months later.

Dr. Ronald Mincy will testify at a hearing on March 8th of the Senate’s Joint Economic Committee (JEC) on the staggering rates of African American male unemployment.

Nabila El Bassel Receives $2.8 Million Grant from NIMH
Dr. Nabila El Bassel has received an additional two-year, $2.8 million dollar grant from the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH).  The grant will be used to support Project Eban, a national, multi-site study on HIV/AIDS risk reduction for African American couples.

School of Social Work Announces Spring Program for Wednesday Series
The Columbia University School of Social Work is launching its spring 2007 Wednesday Series program on January 24 th. The Series will open with a special lecture by Dr. Katherine Shear, the Marion E. Kenworthy Professor of Psychiatry in Social Work, entitled “ Clinical Social Work in the 21st Century: A Psychiatrist's Perspective on an Urgent Agenda.”

CUSSW Student and Advisor to Present at International Forum in El Salvador
Ms. Blanca Martinez, a second-year student at the Columbia University School of Social Work (CUSSW) and Ms. Marina A. Henriquez, Director of Student Services at CUSSW, will participate in the 75th “International Forum on Genocide and Truth” hosted by the José Feliciano Ama Foundation (FAMA) in Izalco, El Salvador from January 17-23, 2007. The forum commemorates the 1932 genocide of Indigenous people of El Salvador. Martinez and Henriquez will be presenting, “A View of Native Peoples from the Salvadoran Diaspora.”

Social Work Professor Receives Three-Year, $650,000 Grant from the National Institute of Mental Health
Vincent Guilamo-Ramos, an associate professor at the Columbia University School of Social Work, has received a three year, $650,000 grant from the National Institute of Mental Health. The grant will be used to develop a social work intervention to improve parent-adolescent communication and to prevent adolescent sexual risk behavior among Latino and African American youth.
