Goals And Objectives of the Module
Educational Goal: Students will be able to demonstrate competencies in knowledge, skills, and attitudes of an effective clinician in evaluating and caring for culturally diverse patients with hyperlipidemia in the primary care setting.
Medical Knowledge
The students will:
- Apply the nationally accepted guidelines for diagnosing high blood cholesterol (Adult Treatment Panel III) in patient care.
- Review elements of lifestyle modification in hyperlipidemia patients.
- Describe basic management principles of patients with hyperlipidemia.
- Review the clinical identification of metabolic syndrome.
Patient Care
The students will:
- Recognize the importance of appropriate screening for hyperlipidemia.
- Apply proper elements of the patient history and physical to identify lifestyle, other cardiovascular risk factors, and assess concomitant disorders that affects prognosis and guides treatment.
- Identify recommended laboratory studies in patients with hyperlipidemia.
- Formulate management plans for the longitudinal care of patients with hyperlipidemia.
- Develop prevention plans, including health education and behavioral change strategies, for high blood cholesterol patients, following accepted national clinical practice guidelines (Adult Treatment Panel III).
Interpersonal and Communication Skills
The student will:
- Explore relevant psychosocial and cultural issues that impact on care.
- Appraise the importance of providing culturally sensitive and responsive education, counseling, and care to patients and their families.
- Demonstrate awareness of improved health care outcomes through effective communication with patients.
- Demonstrate sensitivity to human differences and understanding of the impact of gender, ethnic, cultural background, socioeconomic and other social factors.
- Discuss empathic, respectful and non judgmental behaviors with patients.
- Counsel and educate patients and their families.
- Promote wellness and preventive strategies.
Practice Based Learning
The student will:
- Use information technology to access medical information and support self-education and clinical decision making.
- Critically review the medical literature regarding new evidence based clinical trials and its implication on current treatment guidelines (Adult Treatment Panel III).
- Use information technology to access patient and family education resources on hyperlipidemia.
Professionalism
The student will:
- Demonstrate professionalism by completing this web module during the assigned period.
- Show compassion in the treatment of patients and respect for their privacy, dignity and beliefs.
Systems Based Practice
The student will:
- Demonstrate the ability to know which cases can be managed by the primary care physician and which should be referred for co-management with a specialist.
- Develop awareness of practicing cost-effective health care and resource allocation that does not compromise quality of care.
- Demonstrate awareness of improved patient care outcomes through effective communication with other health care professionals, partnerships through community resources, and government agencies.
